DANUBEparksCONNECTED - Workshop Corridor "Land" in the Wachau - Austria

17-04-2017

From 5th to 7th of April 2017 the DANUBEparksCONNECTED partners met in the Wachau to discuss the development of the DANUBE HABITAT CORRIDOR LAND.

Participants from 8 Danube countries started to plan their activities regarding connectivity of protected areas on land. Main topics have been:

- The development of a DANUBE CANYONS NETWORK: This activity is led by the German partners from Landkreis Passau. The main objective is to identify habitats and species in Danube gorges, exchange experiences in the management and maintenance of dry habitats in this special environment and to establish long-term cooperation.

- DANUBE CORRIDOR LAND - FOREST: This activity is led by the partners from Vojvodinasume - a public enterprise in the field of forest management based in Serbia. A Danube Riparian Forest Fitness Check will deliver basic information for a Danube floodplain forest strategy.

The satellite data from the Copernicus Land Monitoring Services (developed by the EU Commission and the European Environment Agency (EEA)) will be used on macro-regional level. During his skype-presentation, Markus Erhard from the EEA introduced the data system to the project partners.

In the following presentation Ruedi Haller from Swiss National Park presented JECAMI - a strategic tool for ecological connectivity, developed by ALPARC - Alpine Network of Protected Areas (one of the strategic partners of DANUBEparksCONNECTED). JECAMI is an online application that facilitates the analysis of ecological connectivity in the European alpine region.

The Kick off event of the Danube Volunteers days will be organised by our collgeagues from Nature Park Kopacki rit on the 30th of June in Kopacki rit. The whole DANUBEparksCONNECTED team will work voluntarily in the Protected Area for one day. After we had the experience by ourselves, all Protected Areas will organise the 1st Danube Volunteers day under the topic managing and promoting dry habitats within the timeframe of July and October 2017. Most of the activities will be organised in September 2017 accompanied by a small Danube-wide Facebook-campaign to increase our visibilty and gain experience for the 2nd Danube Volunteers day in April 2018.

The field trips during the DANUBEparksCONNECTED workshops are always an important part of the agenda. They provide time for informal knowledge exchange and also give us the opportunity to learn more about the host protected area which this time has been the Wachau. Our colleague Hannes Seehofer from World Heritage Municipalities Wachau guided us through this wonderful region and explained a lot about the management of dry grasslands and working with volunteers.

A special "thank you" to the colleagues from World Heritage Municipalities Wachau for their hospitality and the perfect organisation of the event!
