Reports on the route assessment of EuroVelo 6 – Atlantic - Black Sea finalized

EuroVelo 6 – Atlantic - Black Sea is a long-distance cycle route connecting Nantes in France with the Black Sea.

In the context of the project Transdanube.Pearls, the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) has been subcontracted by the project partners West Pannon (WESTPA) and the City of Vukovar (CIVUK) to do a survey of the stretch of EuroVelo 6 along the Danube river. For this purpose, a team of the ECF cycled the entire route in Summer 2018 and assessed the route’s infrastructure (e.g. traffic, surface, gradients), attractiveness and signing but also services (e.g. accommodation, food, bike repair) and marketing.

Given that the Transdanube.Pearls project addresses the development and implementation of sustainable mobility offers along the Danube, cycling plays an important role in this context. EuroVelo 6, especially along the Danube, is one of the most popular routes in the EuroVelo network, and it is little wonder why: Coasts, castles, top-class infrastructure and a nice flat topography make the route every cycle tourist's dream journey.

Two reports have been elaborated: one with information about the route assessment in Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, and one report about the route assessment in Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria.

Those reports include data about the above-mentioned criteria (infrastructure, attractiveness, services, marketing), but also recommendations for the partners and their regions regarding quality improvements per country for reaching the European Certification Standard, a methodology developed by the ECF to identify strengths and weaknesses of a route and to motivate decision-makers to invest into solutions to the identified problems or to promote the route.
