JOINTISZA pilot action focuses on flood and drought

During the last week of October 2017, Szolnok, Hungary, hosted a JOINTISZA project event focusing on pilot activities related to drought and climate change. The pilot project aims to investigate climate change-induced drought and flood-related issues within a small region of the Tisza River Basin.

The pilot area, with a territory of 3,296 km2, belongs to the Middle-Tisza Water Directorate (KÖTIVIZIG) operational area, and is part of the Tisza-Körös Valley Cooperation Water Management System (TIKEVIR). The pilot area’s channels receive water from Tisza Lake, which was created by the Kisköre Dam and is the largest artificial lake of Hungary. The area is subject to extreme climate: it is possible within the same year that serious inland excess water will be followed by a severe drought.

As the first order of business, an ad hoc task group was established and held its first meeting on the October 25. The group is tasked with: acting as an implementation-focused think-tank for pilot activity; managing pilot testing of the ‘Shared Vision Planning’ methodology; and elaborating a guidance paper on specific climate change-induced water quantity issues.

A “Shared Vision Planning Pilot Methodology and Stakeholders Workshop” was held next, on October 25-27. The event introduced the stakeholders to the methodology concepts and baseline conditions in the selected pilot area.

The event in Szolnok gave stakeholders an opportunity for interactive discussion on climate change issues, and to jointly identify the goals that are to be achieved in the planning process in the selected pilot area. The main topics explored were: water supply, irrigation and flood protection.
