GREEN DANUBE ON THE RIGHT TRACK

It has been a year since 16 project partners and associated strategic partners started their journey called GREEN DANUBE. With easier or more challenging days, with expectations and accomplishments, we have worked together throughout 2017 as the success of a project is always the result of teamwork.

We are concerned about pollution in general and atmospheric pollution in particular and try to offer a solution to people who always go to waterfronts looking for clean air. Modern means of transportation pollute, and water transport makes no exception. Although its contribution to global pollution is the smallest in relation to the volume of transported cargo, we are concerned about its reduction. To this end, several project activities are in progress:

AIR EMISSIONS MEASUREMENTS

A first set of air emissions measurements was concluded at the beginning of November. The field experts went along the Danube with tailor-made high precision equipment and monitored the main air pollutants for 24 hours non-stop in each of the seven different points in the four selected areas: Danube Delta and Iron Gates in Romania, Gemenc in Hungary and Engelhartszell at the border between Austria and Germany.

COLLECTING INFORMATION ON GREEN TECHNOLOGIES

Our consortium addresses the challenges of air pollution in the Danube region, the level of pollution due to the different technologies used in river transport, the fuels used and the different environmental policies in the region, and obviously inadequate information on environmental protection. The survey on characteristics and operating regimes of IWT vessels passing the selected critical areas and the inventory of innovative technologies and best practices, as well as the one of existing facilities and future options for supply of alternative fuels along the Danube are currently carried out under the coordination of BDCA, the Bulgarian project partner, and will lead to a strategy for emission reduction in the Danube Region. 

POLICY AND LEGISLATIVE FRAMEWORK SURVEY

The scanning and mapping of existing policy and legislative framework with relevance for Inland Waterway Transport has been concluded. Partners in all seven countries of the partnership have carried out a targeted research to find the EU, regional and national policies, documents regarding directives, strategies and action plans. GREEN DANUBE project has been promoted and disseminated by all partners every time they met stakeholders and the meeting of Danube Commission Working Group on Technical matters in October was a great opportunity for our Associated Strategic Partner to propose inclusion of project results in one of their documents.
