IDES - The Tisza pilot area second workshop

05-12-2022

The second workshop for the Hungarian pilot area was held in Szolnok, on June 30, 2022, with an attendance of  17 participants.
According to the participants, the most significant pressures in the region of the pilot area are drought and floods. While the other three pressures can strengthen these two, participants in the workshop agreed that these two pressures should be reduced the most.

During the last decades, weather in the region has become more and more extreme causing severe water shortages or floods. Invasive species reduce the water conveyance capacity of the active floodplains, which in turn could further increase the flood risk.
Therefore it was agreed that the selected measures should be able to reduce the flood risk as well as water scarcity/drought. According to the participants, the best solution is to expand the floodplain by moving the dykes, creating space for water retention. This would potentially bring benefits from the landscape point of view as well as from the cultural one. This kind of floodplain restoration accomplished though dyke relocation should also be accompanied by the reduction of agricultural pollution.

In order for this to happen, it is necessary to assess the areas where dyke relocation is possible and water retention may occur after a flood event.

Here are the projected pressures and the change that each selected pressure would need, in an optimal scenario:
Floods -1
Drought -1
Extreme natural events -0.7
Land use change -0.3
Invasive species -0.4
