SABRINA - CYCLING THE CHANGE AT VELO-CITY CONFERENCE IN LJUBLJANA

30-06-2022

Velo-city is the annual flagship event of the European Cyclists’ Federation. It plays a valuable part in promoting cycling as a sustainable and healthy means of transport for all and is a place where advocates, cities, decision-makers, academics, researchers, and industry leaders meet to shape the future of cycling. From 14 to 17 June 2022 over 1400 Velo-citizens from over 60 countries gathered in Ljubljana, Slovenia under the slogan Cycling the Change

The four-day event offered a range of very interesting plenary sessions, round tables, and discussions. The exhibition area was full of engaging stands, presenting cycling, its benefits and needs from different perspectives. Besides, many side events were organized in Ljubljana with the bike parade being one of the most memorable ones.

The SABRINA project presented its activities and results at one of the booths in the Exhibition area, where we focused mostly on the EuroVelo long-distance bicycle routes surveys and results. The visitors could see also the bicycle we used to survey around 3500 km of EuroVelo routes and see the videos from the surveys in Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Our activities and the CycleRAP model, which was piloted in the SABRINA project and is one of the three methodologies used in the project to assess the safety of the selected parts of the EuroVelo routes, were presented twice at the Freewheel stage. In the session Cycling tourism on the rise: using data for growth Leonid Ljubotina from the SABRINA project partner the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, presented SABRINA’s activities and why data and results matter in the field of more cycling tourism.

In 2023, the city of Leipzig in Germany will host Velo-city from 9 to 12 May. Burkhard Jung, Mayor of Leipzig: “The bicycle can and will play a major role in the upcoming urban mobility transformation, and it should be allocated the required road space for people to cycle around quickly and safely. We expect Velo-city to bring us new impulses for strengthening cycling and rebalancing the different modes of transport.”

Thank you, Ljubljana, and see you in Leipzig!
