SABRINA - SABRINA project at ECOMM 2022 Conference in Turku, Finland

27-06-2022

A big part of the SABRINA project was devoted to data collection on cycling infrastructure conditions on EuroVelo routes in the Danube region. SABRINA project partners have collected good and poor infrastructure practices, facts on benefits of cycling as well as road attributes along more than 3000 km of cycling EuroVelo networks.

SABRINA project representatives Lucia Ilieva from Club "Sustainable Development of Civil Society" (Bulgaria) and Olivera Rozi from European Institute of Road Assessment - EuroRAP (Slovenia) have participated in the European Conference on Mobility Management 2022 (ECOMM) in Turku, Finland, between 31 May and 2 June 2022. with the motto “Be inspired by…Sustainable mobility!” to present the SABRINA data collection process and preliminary results as well as to share the experiences of collecting smart mobility data and discuss rediscovering walking and cycling in an urban environment.

We are all generating a huge amount of data every single moment. With new technologies and 5G networks, the amount of data that will be generated is hard to imagine. We are consumers and users of data every day and despite challenges that data collection faces (i.e. GDPR, anonymization, cybercrimes, etc.) in transport, data can support not only individuals in finding the best way to go from A to B in the rush hours, but it can also significantly support policies and stakeholders in mobility chain to design better, safer, smarter and more sustainable infrastructure and services. This cannot be more applicable to cycling and other modes of active traveling.” said Olivera Rozi in her introduction to the session "Collecting Smart Mobility Data" which she chaired.

Lucia Ilieva, CSDCS, gave a thorough presentation on the SABRINA project results pointing out the findings of data collection as part of the SABRINA project and identifying safety gaps in cycling infrastructure in the Danube area, especially when compared with Western Europe.

During the session chaired by Olivera Rozi, the discussions on a) usage of weather observation data for designing proactive communication about winter maintenance of cycle paths,  b) simulation of bicycle flows from mobile network data, c) giving citizens a voice in mobility planning: an innovative mapping tool to enable spatial co-creation and d) digital twins enabling smarter mobility management has been held.
