SABRINA - #CommitToAct: Streets for Life Week of Action

16-05-2022

#CommitToAct is the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety led campaign. It calls for government decision-makers to make specific, measurable road safety commitments and to put those commitments into action. #CommitToAct empowers and equips NGOs to secure these commitments at national, state, and city levels, creating a platform for accountability.

The first #CommitToAct campaign was launched in 2019 and it continued in 2020 under the theme My Roads, My Right. This is when the SABRINA project joined forces with the RADAR project, supported the campaign and called for action. See our video HERE. This year, #CommitToAct Streets for Life campaign happens in a Week of Action from 16-20 May 2022. NGOs around the world are meeting with their decision-makers to seek specific meaningful commitments for 30 km/h limits where people move, live, and play, along with other evidence-based interventions, investment in proven action, and NGO involvement in decision-making processes.

In the SABRINA project, we are committed to safer streets with a focus on safer cycling infrastructure. Namely, besides pedestrians, cyclists are one of the most vulnerable road users. We support the campaign and as well “believe that every person must be guaranteed safe, affordable, accessible, sustainable mobility, ensuring access to education, work, and the choices that enable any individual to achieve their maximum potential, leaving no one behind”.

For cyclists, the speed of the cars on the roads where bicycles and cars mix, is one of the decisive factors when it comes to serious injuries and even deaths amongst cyclists. According to new Dutch data, “relatively more bicycle deaths occur on roads where a maximum speed of 50 km/h applies and both cyclists and cars travel on the road”. Motorized vehicles’ speed limits and actual operating speed are also one of the main attributes in the RAP protocols (iRAP and CycleRAP) showing how safe cycling infrastructure is.
