SABRINA - SPRING IS TIME TO DUST OFF YOUR BICYCLE

01-04-2022

Hats off to those who cycle year-round. A great example is the people of Oulu, a city in Finland (check out the video on YouTube, where Oulu is featured from 0:36 to 1:21). However, for many of us, spring is the time to dust off our bicycles and start the cycling season.

In March 2010, two best friends Patrick Stephenson and Zachariah Schaap from Minneapolis co-founded a social media campaign named 30 Days of Biking. The premise of 30 Days of Biking was very simple: pledge to bike every day in April, no matter the weather, then share your adventures online with the hashtag #30daysofbiking. It didn’t matter how far you rode. It could be a long bike ride or just a kilometer to your grocery store, around the neighborhood, or across the street to meet a friend. You just had to bike. Slowly but surely people started to join the pledge and 30 Days of Biking got a big push. The founders said in one of the interviews that people love bikes and want to ride every day. The movement just gave their desire a name and a month. The logo 30 Days of Biking are three X, a symbol of the community of joyful cyclists that represents the Roman numerals for 30 and looks like a partial hashtag.

In the SABRINA project, we joined the 30 Days of Biking challenge already last year and posted our adventures on the SABRINA Twitter profile. We used the bicycle for post-work bike rides, grocery shopping, and day-by-day errands, we felt the world passing by hearing, seeing, and smelling it. We experienced four seasons and contributed to a cleaner environment. We also noticed that the cycling infrastructure was mostly non-existent, and we had to share the roads with cars.

This year, we also invite you to pledge to ride your bike every day in April and share your adventures online with the hashtag #30daysofbiking. Again, there is no minimum distance, it is just important you ride your bicycle every day. Check out the 30 Days of Biking Twitter profile to see the cycling adventures of the other participants or the official webpage,  where you can create your Pledge Page, check out the events around the world and get inspired to maybe organize an event also in your community.

We wish you happy riding and stay safe out there!
