Danube Cycle Plans - Guideline for Assessment of cycling infrastructure and investment necessities

12-12-2021

One of the goals of Danube Cycle Plans project is creating a Danube Cycle Route Network (DCRN) or “DanuVelo” which will be a macro-regional network of cycle routes connecting (participating) countries in the Danube region. It will integrate EuroVelo routes and the highest level of the national cycle routes (NCRN) into one comprehensive transnational network.

The guideline is intended to help each project partner prepare an assessment of the current status of cycling infrastructure in their country and calculate an estimate of investment needed for improvements and/or construction of new one.

Out of their National Cycle Route Network (NCRN), each country will define a “Core Cycle Route Network” consisting of the long-distance routes and sometimes small parts of regional and local routes for the purpose of cross-border connection with the neighbouring countries. After, they will assess the quality of the current cycling infrastructure and categorize different sections with one of the four categories defined in the document while using a geographic information system to calculate the length for each category. Based on all the information gathered, estimates of investment costs for the whole cycling network in each country will be calculated.

From this data, we will get a good grasp of the investment needs for the whole infrastructure, from which the investment plans and funding options will be created by the national working groups set up in all the countries involved in the Danube Cycle Plans project.

About Danube Cycle Plans Project

The Danube Cycle Plans project addresses the mobility challenges by setting actions to strengthen the three main pillars of cycling promotion:

  1. Facilitate the development of cycling policies at national and transnational level supported by National Cycling Plans based on a common transnational Danube Cycling Strategy;
  2. Support the provision of adequate cycling infrastructure by defining the Danube Cycle Route Network, developing common standards and deriving an investment plan to upgrade current conditions;
  3. Increase the awareness of relevant stakeholders for the needs of cyclists and increase their capacity to promote cycling in the whole Danube region by implementing a mentoring system, inspiration events and national cycling conferences.
