Danube Cycle Plans - Jaroslav Vymazal, Jihlava City: How to reduce car traffic for 14 %?

10-12-2021

Jihlava, a centre of the Vysocina Region in the Czech Republic has long been involved in the development of sustainable transport. Thanks to many measures in the field of transport (construction of cycle tracks and modernization of public transport), individual car traffic in Jihlava was reduced by 14%.

„We have significantly improved the conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport,“ says Jaroslav Vymazal, City councillor for transport.

The year 2011 became a milestone, when by signing the Uherské Hradiště Charter, the city management officially undertook to strive for:

  • promotion of cycling and cycling tourism
  • increasing the share of bicycle traffic
  • elimination of problem areas and sections with a high risk of cyclists' accidents
  • improving the conditions for bicycle parking
  • implementation of projects that will lead to a wider use of the bicycle in commuting to school and work.

To fulfill the above-mentioned obligations 'The Generel' of bicycle transport was used. Its goal was to integrate bicycle transport into the city's transport system. The cyclist needs to be seen as a normal traffic participant.

Jihlava has been a Healthy City since 2007, which is why it is actively joining the European Mobility Week awareness campaign. In cooperation with partners, it is preparing a varied program for the public focused on raising awareness and promoting environmentally friendly modes of transport in the city. It offers various events to support walking, cycling and public bus transport.

„It really has not finished yet. According to the general development plan, we still have something to build and we are building indeed. Every year we add new sections of cycle tracks, we modernize, we improve the conditions for public transport and for pedestrians, we create comfortable and safe corridors,“ adds Jaroslav Vymazal about the next plans for sustainable mobility.
