ISTER - Capacity building workshop on our Roman heritage in Veszprém
01-12-2021
The Municipality of Veszprém with the support of the Laczkó Dezső Museum is a project partner in the international project of ISTER. The first capacity building workshop of the project was hosted by the Museum on 15th November 2021.
Brigitta Péterváry-Szanyi the director of the Laczkó Dezső Museum, also an archaeologist deal with the Roman period, has provided the professional background for the project from the beginning. In her presentation, she emphasized that there is great potential in our region, we can find serious scientific finds during the excavations, and we can even achieve a serious breakthrough while bringing the locals closer to this heritage with the planned excavations.
"Our cultural heritage will only become truly alive if we connect it with the local stakeholders, the residents, who need to know what treasures they may be going through every day, and tourism can help a lot in this," said Dr Katalin Lőrincz, researcher of the University of Pannonia.
„Knowing the purpose of the project, which means not only scientific exploration, cataloguing and conferences, but also making the results available to everyone. I was pleased to join the initiative and present the archaeological parks as a unique tool in the latter endeavour. The archaeological park is attractive to everyone, but especially to the young people, the children enjoy it very much,” said Loránd Olivér Kovács, the head of the Villa Romana Baláca Exhibition Center of the Hungarian National Museum and the Gorsium Archaeological Park of the King St. Stephen Museum.
The main goal of ISTER is to rediscover the ancient Roman road network and revitalize its heritage along the Danube. It can be also a key for promoting territorial development based on the sustainable use of cultural and natural heritage.
Veszprém as a project partner focuses on the triangle of Villa Romana in Balácapuszta, the recently discovered Roman settlement in Nagyvázsony (Nagyreméz-dűlő) and the city of Veszprém, as well as on the roads connecting them - we learned from Renáta Kiss, the project coordinator. This workshop series will continue next January.
