D2C - Winter Wetlands Bike Tour along the Drava River in Croatia

21-02-2021

On Wednesday, 3 February 2021, the Public institution for the management of protected parts of nature and ecological network of Virovitica-Podravina County , the Dare to Connect project partner, organised Winter Wetlands Bike Tour.

The aim of this event was promotion of the Worlds Wetlands Day and the Ramsar Convention, whose 50th anniversary we are celebrating this year. Participants had the opportunity to learn more about the International Waterbird Census (IWC) and the experience of the Public institution’s on-the-field work regarding winter monitoring of the wetlands birds that takes place in January every year. IWC is the largest and oldest monitoring program in the world, which has been implemented since 1967, and Croatia has been participating in it since 1991. The Dare To Connect project was introduced to participants too.

Participants then rode 10 kilometres long Bike Tour held along the Drava River in Virovitica-Podravina County, in the area of the Transboundary Biosphere Reserve Mura – Drava – Danube, Natura 2000 habitats, the Green Belt of Europe and the pilot Area of the Dare to Connect project. The ride included visits to the nearby wetlands located in the area of the implementation of the Dare to Connect project.

The event was organised in compliance with all prescribed epidemiological measures.
