REDISCOVER - Days of Jewish Culture in Murska Sobota

05-10-2020

Thanks to the Rediscover project, Institute for Culture, Tourism and Sport Murska Sobota organised the first edition of „Days of Jewish Culture in Murska Sobota” and included it in the European Days of Jewish Culture 2020 framework. The series of events promoting Jewish cultural heritage was organised between the 7th and 22nd of September 2020 in Murska Sobota.

As first the lecture with the title „Travel to the Holy Land in the past and life in it today“ was on the agenda where Maja Kutin, who studied and lived in Israel, took us to the Holy Land “then and now”. Further traditional Jewish music concert by the Kontra Quartet group from Slovenia took place. Although musicians do not have Jewish roots they inspire with klezmer, traditional Jewish music. Each performed song had its own story and expressed the Jewish culture.

Another event was the projection of the movie „Jews in Slovenia“, the first Slovenian movie to open the topic of a silenced and almost forgotten memory of the Jewish community and the Holocaust in Slovenia. Following the projection an interview with recognized and award-winning movie director Maja Weiss took place as well and extremely interesting and shocking discussion with descendants of members of the Jewish community who were part of the movie.

Final event was the guided tour with presentation of tangible and intangible Jewish cultural heritage of Murska Sobota with emphasis on Jewish families and the stories of their members who significantly influenced development of the city in the first half of the last century. Guided tour ended with the presentation of fragments of Jewish gastronomy, namely dessert tasting with recipes taken from the book „Behind the table with the Jews of Prekmurje“

.

The events received a lot of publicity and were extremely well accepted by the participants, thus they contributed to a major progress in the field of recognition of Jewish heritage and awareness of the importance of the former Jewish community for Murska Sobota.
