JOINTISZA - Waste collection on the Tisza

30-07-2019

After weeks of flooding of the Tisza River a record volume of drift wood and communal waste -mostly plastic- mass has reached the Kisköre barrage. The surface of this drift mass covers 17 000 m2 and can be thicker than 3 m. To manage the escalated situation the General Directorate of Water Management of Hungary, the Coca-Cola Foundation and the civil initiative of the PET cup joined forces. This cooperation means continuous protection tasks, the recycling of the waste and the cleaning up of the river in general.

While the local water management directorate KÖTIVIZIG collects the floating waste with heavy machinery operated from ships, the PET cup focuses on the collection of PET bottles in the framework of plastic collection competitions by boats during the summer season.

Programme co-funded by European Union funds (ERDF, IPA, ENI)
