Sava TIES - World Wetlands Day 2019- Future on the Wetland Border

The Sava TIES project was presented at two awareness raising events organized in occasion of celebrating World Wetlands Day. One event was organized on February 1, 2019 in Šabac (Serbia) by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia, Institute for Nature Conservation of Vojvodina Province and IUCN - Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, with the support of the City of Šabac, the Center for Professional Development of Šabac and Primary School "Stojan Novakovic" from Šabac. SavaTIES project and the achievements of SavaParks network was presented by Alen Kis, expert for forest protection from the Institute for Nature Conservation of Vojvodina Province. On this occasion, he pointed out that spreading of invasive species can lead to serious consequences to the wetlands.

The other event was organized on February 2, 2019 in Village of Stružec (Croatia) - the village on the edge of the Lonjsko Polje Nature Park by the Branch of Matrix Croatica Kutina and Lonjsko Polje Nature Park Public Institution. The sponsor of the event was the City of Popovaca, and manifestation was supported by the Sisak Moslavina County and the Tourist Board of the Popovača Municipality. In the frame of the program, a round table was held "From Stružec 2002 to Stružec 2019" with a series of lectures and video projections. Lonjsko Polje Nature Park Public Institution presented the objectives and main activities of the Sava TIES project, which purpose is preserving wet habitats in protected areas from the source to the mouth of the Sava River through the effective management of invasive species. Within the project presentation, the emphasis was also on promoting of the traditional land use practices in protected areas, particularly in the strengthening of traditional agriculture such as ecological agriculture and extensive pasturing, production of traditional products and development of sustainable tourism. For this occasion, the Lonjsko Polje Nature Park Public Institution had prepared the educational leaflets of the Sava TIES project which were available to the visitors.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February. This day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar. The Convention on Wetlands, called the Ramsar Convention, is the intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.  This year's Ramsar Convention message "Wetlands and climate changes" on behalf of the Republic of Croatia for the Ramsar Convention was sent by Marijana Kapa, Senior Expert Advisor at the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
