GREEN DANUBE - In Galați, Romania, at the opening of Environmental Information Centre

Within the activities for raising public awareness, CERONAV, the Lead Partner of GREEN DANUBE project organized the Environmental Information Centre (EIC) opening event on Friday, November 9th.

 

The centre is located on board of a school pontoon moored in the centre of the city and easily reachable. The primary purpose of the EIC is to contribute to more effective information sharing to limit impact of Inland Waterway Transport system on the Danube region environment by development of specific tools and organization of actions intended to raise public awareness on environment protection. The EIC provides information that covers among others environment in IWT sector, especially in the Danube sector and prevention of environment pollution by emissions from inland vessels.

Two other similar centres are operational in Croatia and Serbia, while the mobile environmental information centre, developed by the project partner RSOE has recently completed the transnational campaign including Germany, Austria, Bulgaria and Hungary.

The audience consisting of NGOs, local authorities, environment protection agency, public bodies, port and river operators and guests from Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova showed their interest in the high quality equipment and materials available at the centre which they consider being an innovative concept.

All thirty participants have been actively engaged in discussions about their concerns regarding pollution of the Danube region, especially the Romanian side of the lower part of the river, about raising awareness on the importance of environmental pollution prevention actions, about the EU regulations and how to create solutions adapted to local particularities.
