NETWORLD - Study trip to Ieper, Belgium
24-09-2018
NETWORLD project partners spent three exciting days in the first half of September 2018 in visits and tours of sites in the city of Ieper and the surrounding areas of warfare during the First World War (WW1). The Art Installation Assembly and the Temporary Exhibition on WW1 Archaeology at Flanders Filed Museum, the German Cemetery (in Vladslo), Carrefour des Roses and Ledwidge (in Boezinge), the Ieper Salient and Remembrance Trees, the Land Art Installation in de Palingbeek with its 600.000 little statues representing all the victims of WW1 in the area, and many other sites of the study trip’s program brought partners’ admiration and tribute to those who died on the front line in the vicinity of Iper during the First World War.
The partners took part in a remembrance for Joseph Edward Toms (07.07.1897 – 03.05.1017), a soldier who died during the WW1 and was buried in the area. They attended the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate of Ieper with laying of a wreath for the victims in the WW1 in the Danube region. The program’s trip ended with morning walk around Ieper on 8th of September with a focus on city devastation during the war and the follow-up reconstruction in the pre-war look of the city.
The visit in Ieper area was initiated by NETWORLD partners because of the area’s best practices in WW1 cultural heritage and good international cooperation. The Belgium's colleagues from the In Flanders Fields Museum and Tourism Destination Visit Flanders presented their promotional and educational activities, experiences and further ideas related to preserving and management of the WW1 cultural heritage.
