The Austrian NETWORLD project partners die Berater and Danube University Krems organised a roundtable that took place on May 17, 2018 in Kötschach-Mauthen (Carinthia) in order to discuss with relevant stakeholders the future handling of the First World War Heritage in the Carnic Alps, in the border region of Carinthia and East Tyrol. The event was organised in cooperation with the Dolomitenfreunde Association (Gabriele Schaumann and Karin Schmid), which had first introduced the idea of the "Trail of Peace" / "Friedenswege" / "Le Vie della Pace" back in the 1970s. The roundtable took place at a historic place, as the municipality of Kötschach-Mauthen belonged to the war zone of the so called Southwestern Front, the frontline between Austria-Hungary and Italy during the First World War. The participants met in the municipality building of Kötschach-Mauthen, where the First World War museum "Museum 1915-1918. From the Ortler to the Adriatic Sea" is located and managed by the Dolomitenfreunde Association.

Together with different regional and local stakeholders from Carinthia and East and North Tyrol, Julia Walleczek-Fritz and Holger Bienzle discussed the questions of preservation, communication and potentials of a future touristic use of Austria's First World War remains in the Carnic Alps, ideas and concepts of an appropriate strategy and management plan.
