AgriGo4Cities - AGRIGO4CITIES – GOOD PRACTICE EXAMPLE: LOS ANGELES GREEN GROUNDS

05-02-2018

Urban and peri-urban farming, in other words, city farming, is not just the latest fashion rave! It is becoming a trend of something big and life-changing for many years. One of the reason is that the urban farming is firmly in line with the overall development of the society and consumer demand. Moreover, currently inside the society predominate the opinion that the best food comes from the city gardens grown by his own hands.

Homaro Cantu: „Urban farming is not only possible, it is crucial. But it can't be like the farming techniques of yore.“

Urban farming is an expression that has already settled in traditional vocabulary and is generally associated with the trend of increasing demand for bio / organic food. In developed countries, the trend in bio-food demand has quickly replaced the emphasis on regional origin. This type of consumers quickly realized that even though it is organic food it makes no sense to transport it over half of the continent.

Furthermore, city farming undoubtedly contributes to the cultivation of public space in towns and promotes the consolidation of urban micro-communities. One of the key facts also is that children living in the cities have the opportunity at least to see how the food they eat is produced.

Interesting facts:

  • EU is the largest food importer in the world.
  • 1 in 6 people is dependent on food imports.
  • 400% is an increase in food exports in the second half of the 20th century.

Cultivate your well-being! Build a community!

As an example of good practice can definitely be a grassroots organization called LA Green Grounds. This organization consists of volunteers dedicated to working with residents of South Los Angeles, California to convert their front lawns and parkways into edible landscapes and urban farms. Families, friends, neighbors, and volunteers working together which creates a sense of community. They think of LA Green Grounds as a way of life and their mission is to empower South LA’s communities and beyond, one garden at a time.

Ron Finley, a guerilla gardener in South Central LA: „Growing your own food is like printing your own money.“
