NETWORLD - Interviews with stakeholders and experts in WW1 heritage protection, conservation and presentation

Varna Economic Development Agency (VEDA) has organized a series of surveys and interviews with stakeholders and experts in WW1 heritage protection, conservation and presentation in the period June – August, 2017 to collect historical and cultural evidences on WW1 events and places. The information gathered was analyzed and processed to help the realization of project activities under the WP 3, namely creation of NETWORLD database in the countries of DTP area.
There were fifteen meetings with experts and local officials from the City Region Odessos, Varna Municipality, travel agencies, tourist informational centers, universities, clusters and NGOs. The recently visited structure - Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in Varna, included beneficial and very informative meeting with the Capitan Associated Professor Asen Kozhuharov, PhD, Head of Naval Tactics Department. As a historian, Captain Kozhuharov presented a lot of information about the Alley with Bas-reliefs of the Academy notable persons since the foundation of maritime education in Bulgaria in 1881, including the names of persons - WW1 participants and Academy principals/professors at that time. The walk along the alley was followed by a visit and a look through the Museum exhibitions of the Naval Academy. One of the museum sections is devoted to the training of seafarers during the WW1. The vision of leadership is the Museum to be re-organized and transformed into a city Museum of Maritime Education for tourists and visitors.
VEDA representatives met also with Associated Professor Veselka Radeva, PhD from Department “Mathematics and Physics” who is in charge of the Planetarium, located on the upper floor of the museum building. There was a fruitful discussion for the advantages of this structure for students’ training and as a city tourist attraction.
