2020 is a game-changer for road safety

PROJECT RADAR SHOWCASE OF RESULTS INSPIRED 160 PARTICIPANTS AT THE JOINT CONFERENCE 

More than 240 road safety experts and representatives of the road infrastructure safety sector from the Danube area and transport stakeholders from all over the world registered for the joint online conference of projects Risk Assessment on Danube Area (RADAR) and Safer Bicycle Routes in Danube Area (SABRINA). The conference that was organised in cooperation with the European Union Strategy for Danube Region (EUSDR) - PA1b: To improve mobility and multimodality - Road, Rail, and Air Links, was a great success. It was the perfect opportunity to create synergies between different and new stakeholders and a chance for road safety organisations and experts to chart future strategic directions focusing on the improvement of road infrastructure safety in the Danube area for all road users.

ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE SAFETY TRAINING COURSES & WEBINARS

The RADAR project is promoting positive road performance around Europe not only to implement learning and transnational cooperation activities to help the relevant organisations in the Danube area to identify risk on their networks but to help them reduce risk systematically by improving road infrastructure and roads' layout. With Road Infrastructure Safety Training courses RADAR project analysed the road safety data that highlights the scale of the problem of road trauma in the area as well as trained local experts on how to perform road surveys and road safety analysis in ViDA software. The training courses were deployed in all partners' countries, carried out by trainers with experience with the methodology at hand.

ROAD SAFETY EXPERTS group meetings 

Through the Road Safety Expert Group (RSEG) meetings, the RADAR project offers opportunities for converging policies in a transnational strategy, reinforcing the need for harmonisation at the EU level. The RSEG meetings were deployed on four thematic areas: Safer Road Investment Plans; Provisions for Vulnerable Road Users (Pedestrians and Cyclists); Smart Speed Management Infrastructure and Road Safety Near Schools. Based on the discussions and meetings, reports on all four thematic areas are being used as the basis of the Danube Infrastructure Road Safety Improvement Strategy (DIRSIS), setting vision and objectives for road safety in the region, and Country Specific Action Plans (DIRSIAP) with detail of actions, time plan and contribution needed to achieve the DIRSIS.

SABRINA project focuses on road infrastructure safety for cyclists as one of the most vulnerable road users. It tackles cycling infrastructure safety issues on existing, planned, and missing cycling corridors crossing nine countries in the Danube area. The project's goal is to improve conditions for road bicycle infrastructure safety in the region by raising all relevant national, regional, and local stakeholders to build and improve bicycle infrastructure in a safe and sustainable way.

CAPITALISATION ACTIVITIES: Q&A SESSION WITH PROJECTS SLAIN AND RADAR

RADAR project in cooperation with the Saving Lives Assessing and Improving TEN-T Road Network Safety (SLAIN) hosted the Questions and Answers (Q&A) session focusing on the future of road safety using a network-wide risk assessment. The event was part of this year's European Week of Regions and Cities, which is an annual Brussels-based event dedicated to regional policy and development by the European Committee of the Regions.

capitalisation activities: RADAR AT EUSDR SG MEETING: WHAT CAN COVID-19 TEACH US ABOUT MOBILITY?

RADAR project was successfully presented at the 20th PA1b Steering Committee Group meeting that was held online on June 2, 2020. Once the Covid-19 pandemic will be defeated, the accident pandemic is going to continue and we really need to do something about that. We need to implement a safe system: five-star drivers in five-star cars driving safe speed on five-star roads. As Olivera Rozi, Project Director, EIRA-EuroRAP explained: "We need money to invest in improving road infrastructure and making it safer. We need knowledge. We need skills to improve safety on roads. We need tools to improve safety on infrastructure. We need political will."

capitalisation activities: ROADPOL: OPERATION WITH FOCUS ON THE ROAD

RoadPol - European Road Policing Network - goes beyond borders for saving lives. It is a network of European traffic police forces led by senior police officers. It is primarily committed to reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries on European roads. Its members are the traffic police forces of various European countries, but they are open to countries outside Europe as well.
