Stability of riparian forests in Mura-Drava-Danube Biosphere Reserve is declining. Majority of native key stone species is seriously damaged. Natural forest regeneration often fails. So, what to do? REFOCuS came up with recommendations on which tree species to use and promote. The report clearly stresses use of native species as the best measure, while discourages use of exotic species due to lack of scientific background. When in doubt which tree species to use, this report is the right place to consult.
TRANSBOUNDARY PLUS-TREE SELECTION CONTINUES
REFOCuS continued with plus-tree selection of target species. Information on selected trees goes to the Register of plus-trees establised by the REFOCuS project. Each plus tree will be DNA fingerprinted at the Slovenian Forestry Institute. DNA fingerprinting helps us to determine tree identity. It shows whether a plus tree is a genetically distinct individual or a clone, grown from suckers or cuttings, and allows us to infer ancestry and family structures. This information is helpful to inform tree conservation programmes and silvicultural practices. To take an insight into how plus-tree selection field work looks like, please visit our gallery

The meeting was organised on 24 of March and gathered representatives of all partners. The planned stakeholder events had to be postponed.
