TAKING STEPS TOWARDS LIVEABLE CITIES AT CITYWALK SYMPOSIUM

On November 28, 2017 the projects transnational Symposium took place in Conference congress centre in the Dominican monastery Ptuj, Slovenia. The Symposium, hosted by the projects lead partner, the Scientific Research Centre Bistra Ptuj, was a midterm thematic and publicity event that served as a platform for higher level consultation forum for experts, EU level actors, policy-makers and to enrich project outcome. The symposium addressed the obstacles of sustainable forms of mobility in the cities. OPPORTUNITIES FOR WALKABILITY IN SZEGED AND VALENCIA

Recent fast urbanisation has brought numerous challenges to our cities – overcrowding, noise, and air pollution. The use of motorised vehicles requires increasing amounts of space, which drastically reduces the quality of living in the city. To improve the sustainability of urban mobility, cities develop environmentally friendly public transit systems and bicycle infrastructure. However, improving the simplest and most basic type of mobility – walking – has long been neglected.

An article on the study conducted in the framework of project CityWalk on "Opportunities for walkability in Szeged and Valencia" written by CityWalk project partners Petra Szűcs, Miklós Lukovics and Béla Kézy aims to answer how is the concept of walkability interpreted in middle-sized European cities.

CITYWALK PARTNERS JOINED IN ON JANE'S WALK 2018

Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. Some CityWalk partners decided to join this global initiative and encourage local people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours among the walkers:

Citywalk - about the project

17 partners from the Danube Region started working on the CityWalk project – Towards energy responsible places: Establishing walkable cities in the Danube Region in December 2016. The financial support of more than 2,2 million € for cooperation was approved within the Interreg Danube Transnational Programme, and is co-funded by European Union funds (ERDF, IPA).

CityWalk project helps cities in the Danube Region to reduce emissions, noise and to become safer, better places to live, by increasing the role of more sustainable forms of mobility in the urban transport mix, especially active transport forms – like walking and biking. To do so the main focus of project is to improve the key conditions of walkability.
