Vače / Slovenia
Or we suggest a visit to one of the best known Iron Age sites in Slovenia. Famous situla from Vače is a constant companion for Slovenian citizens, and to see the location where it was found is almost requisite. The site is marked by an archaeological path. A guided tour, merging expert and performance interpretation into a live depiction of Iron Age life in Vače and its environs, is already scheduled for autumn. Circular path starts in the village of Klenik, with information boards leading through the tumuli necropolises to the settlement in Zgornja krona, an uneven plateau with steep slopes. Settlement was protected by a stone wall, today visible only as terrace edge in the northern and eastern part. There are several features setting this site from those we’d already visited: it has a short line of sight, has no water source and is not situated on or in the vicinity of important communication routes. As far as we can tell from the research, however, none of these factors actually influenced the prominence of the Vače settlement.
