Since summer 2017 Regensburg hosts an international artist-in-residence program. In cooperation with the association donumenta the City of Regensburg set up the “DANUBE ART LAB”. It is one of the artistic pilot projects which contribute to the development of sustainable impulses for a new, contemporary use of the hidden heritage places.

In each of the months of August, September and October 2017, three artists were working in the Academy for Creative Arts in Regensburg as well as in public spaces. A jury of curators from Hungary, Austria and Slovakia had chosen young artists from along the Danube who have already made themselves noticed for their space-related work.

Together with donumenta the City of Regensburg invited for applications for „Hidden Places & Creative Spaces“ residencies from professional artists of all disciplines with an established and demonstrable interest in temporary site-specific interventions by providing them with studio space and accommodation for one month. From visual arts and architecture, through new media and performing arts, to video, film and photography.

The “DANUBE ART LAB” is assumed to flow into the realization of site-specific interventions which were developed and proposed by the artists during their stay in Regensburg. These contemporary approaches comment on and interpret hidden sites and events from various historical periods that have shaped the city of Regensburg – from the Romans to the Middle Ages, from the Early Modern Period and 19th Century all the way to the present day.

The idea is to facilitate history, to unlock the creative potential and to use innovative methods to give visibility to that which is hidden. This should be realized by means of contemporary digital and artistic projects, which initiate an exciting dialogue between the past, present and future. The interventions serve as temporary updates to the historical World Heritage of Regensburg and will be presented in public space from 27 July to 14 October 2018.

The following artists participated: Alena Foustková (Czech Republic), Milijana Istijanović (Montenegro), Nikita Kadan (Ukraine), Bojana Knežević (Republic of Serbia), Dumitru Oboroc (Romania), Klára Orosz (Hungary), Alexandru Raevschi (Moldova), Selma Selman (Bosnia-Herzegovina) und Borjana Ventzislavova (Bulgaria).
