CD SKILLS - Refractory celiac disease - Correct diagnosis and management

31-03-2022

Within CD SKILLS project, the lecture Refractory celiac disease - Correct diagnosis and management was recently organised. The lecture was held by Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Michael Schumann from the Division of Gastroenterology, Infectious Diseases and Rheumatology, Campus Benjamin Franklin, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany invited by our partners LMU University Hospital Munich and National Institute for Mother and Child Health, Bucharest. The lecture was held online and it was followed by a Q&A session.

Refractory celiac disease refers to a rare subgroup of patients with celiac disease who show clinical signs of malabsorption and histological injuries and inflammation despite following a gluten-free diet. Early identification of such patient is critical for early treatment and active follow-up as this subgroup of patients evolves toward intestinal malignancy.

New innovative services are needed in order to improve public healthcare service and quality of life of celiac disease patients, as the existing celiac disease management practices are insufficient in the Danube region. The pilot ICT supported histopathology analysis of biopsy samples is addressing the challenges for an accurate diagnosis of celiac disease.
