„Between Wagner, Hoffmann and Loos: Living in Zagreb in the Art Nouveau Period“

Theme of the documentary film „Between Wagner, Hoffmann and Loos: Living in Zagreb in the Art Nouveau Period“ are forms of urban housing in the era of Secession in Zagreb. The film draws attention to the fact that the new style – Art Nouveau – entered the Zagreb architectural scene with a bang, with buildings in prominent city locations: on the main, Jelačić Square, in Ilica and on the so-called Green horseshoe. Key impulses in the acceptance and adaptation of Art Nouveau modernism came from Vienna. The main role models were the works of architects Otto Wagner, Josef Hoffmann and Adolf Loos. They were followed also by architects who were not educated in Vienna, such as Aladar Baranyai, who studied at the Zagreb School of Architecture. His family houses and villas were designed in the spirit of the aesthetics of the Vienna Workshops (Wiener Werkstätte), but at the same time bear the stamp of a local, primarily Biedermeier, tradition. The Viennese architect Adolf Loos was a great role model for architects Viktor Kovačić and Hugo Ehrlich, especially when it came to interior design. Unfortunately, most of these interiors have not been preserved to this day, so we present them in this film using old photographs.
