ART NOUVEAU2 – International Tourist Guide Day 2022

Since 1989, International Tourist Guide Day has been taking place every year around 21 February, inviting visitors to numerous free tours and talks at selected institutions. The guides aim to show how much worth seeing their city has to offer and, at the same time, prove their own professional knowledge.

After International Tourist Guide Day was only able to take place virtually in 2021, this year’s program includes numerous tours of the MAK’s exhibitions—even though there are fewer tours than in the past and they are only for a limited number of participants.

The tours target the current MAK exhibitions JOSEF HOFFMANN: Progress Through Beauty, TEACHING KLIMT: Studies at the School of Arts and Crafts, as well as the Permanent Collection Vienna 1900 with the SHOWROOM WIENER WERKSTÄTTE. In addition, there will be an outdoor tour of Vienna’s third district as well as several talks, e.g. on Sigmund Freud and Gerard van Swieten, in the MAK Lecture Hall.

As a center of competence for Vienna 1900, the MAK not only addresses this topic in its Collection and the numerous exhibitions but it is also part of the EU Project ART NOUVEAU 2 dedicated to the Art Nouveau heritage in the Danube region.

This year, the cultural magazine published by the Viennese guides in the context of the International Tourist Guide Day looks into “Wien im Wandel” [Vienna in Flux] and highlights the radical changes during Viennese Modernism from around 1870 to 1930. The magazine will be available for free at the MAK and other points of distribution starting 18 February 2022.
