EcoInn Danube - Sustainable Binders for wood boards and furniture
28-05-2018
The Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI-JU) is a € 3.7 billion public-private partnership between the EU and industry. It recognizes the potential of bio-refinery technologies for converting renewable resources into bio-based products, materials and fuels. Two BBI research projects dedicated to the rapidly growing sector of bioeconomy have just started (May 2018). In SUSBIND and SUSFERT Austrian and other European industrial and research partners work hand-in-hand towards the final goal: Development and market launch of sustainable eco-products.
With the aim to replace current formaldehyde-based materials, SUSBIND focusses on the development of binding agents for wood-based products from renewable raw materials. The project´s concept considers coverage oft he entire value chain, from agriculture over binders (adhesives) and wood board producers to furniture sellers. With ecoinnovative institutions such as WoodK plus (Lower Austria, Tulln) - a competence center for wood and other renewable materials - SUSBIND can count on high-level R&D experience.
The project partners have an ambitious mission, as they do not only want to replace fossile-based materials, but to derive the renewable alternatives from side-producs of existent European biorefineries. They have an overall budget of 5.5 Mio (BBI-JU funding €4.1 Mio) and four years time to accomplish their mission.
