Danube STREAM - TRANSNATIONAL AND CROSS-SECTOR COOPERATION FOR THE DANUBE
11-12-2017
Study visit of the Monitoring Committee of the Danube Transnational Programme to DANUBEparksCONNECTED, Danube STREAM andDanubeSediment
In the course of the meeting of the Monitoring Committee (Vienna, 28th-29th November), the MC Members visited the Donau-Auen National Park to get a more detailed insight into ongoing projects that are funded within the frame of the Interreg Danube Transnational Programme. During the study visit in the Donau-Auen National Park, DANUBEparksCONNECTED, Danube Stream and DanubeSediment jointly presented their activities on-site. The Donau-Auen National Park is located between the Twin Cities Vienna and Bratislava and one of the last free-flowing sections in the Upper Danube. It is therefore a model for the added value of transnational and trans-sectoralcooperation.
The study tour demonstrated the efforts of the Danube River Network of Protected Areas (DANUBEPARKS) to foster ecological connectivity along the Danube River. Pilot actions of DANUBEparksCONNECTED were visited, e.g. the WILDisland initiative, aiming to preserve and restore natural islands habitats, stood in the focus of this tour.
Danube STREAM presented its approach towards sustainable waterway management. Restoration projects - implemented jointly by viadonau and Donau-Auen National Park - were visited, and illustrated good practice for the cooperation.
For both sectors, a sustainable sediment regime of the Danube is inevitable. DanubeSediment raises awareness, fosters know-how and contributes to improving transnationalsediment management of the Danube.
After the study trip with the historical boat “Tschaike”, the reconstructed shipping mill provided a charming atmosphere for informal discussions and experience exchange. Both, Tschaike and shipping mill, are good examples for initiatives of local people living with the Danube River.
