MEASURES - Pilot Stocking of Russian Sturgeon and Sterlet in Romania and Hungary

06-05-2019

5000 juvenile sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) were released in Hungary, and more than 1000 of Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) in Romania.

Danube River fauna was enriched last month, as three important sturgeon stocking events have taken place in Isaccea (Romania) and Baja and Ercsi (Hungary). The aim of this activity was to save and strengthen two highly endangered Danube sturgeon populations by state-of-the-art conservational methods.

The fish was previously tagged, in order to enable identification in case of recapture by in-situ surveys, and assist evaluation of survival rates for those released. This will provide valuable insight for larger stocking plans in the future. READ MORE.

ABOUT MEASURES PROJECT

MEASURES aims to create ecological corridors by identifying key habitats and initiating protection measures along the Danube and its main tributaries. In this sense, sturgeons and other migratory fish species will act as flagship species in support of our goals. Read more about the project here: dtp.interreg-danube.eu/measures
