Travel The Roman Danube Limes - a more beautiful way of travelling the Danube

For 400 years the Danube region was the northern border of the Roman Empire and closely connected with this huge economic and cultural area from Scotland to Egypt. Our adventure tour leads along Rome's former "Danube Limes" (UNESCO World Heritage) from Germany to Slovakia. We convey impressions of this fascinating time that can be directly experienced beyond mere sightseeing and let you immerse yourself in the world of the Romans on the Danube!

Day 1: LINZ - BAD GÖGGING - HIENHEIM - EINING FORT WITH ROMAN FESTIVAL - WELTENBURG

The Roman Museum of Spa and Bathing in Bad Gögging sheds light on everyday life, which was also characterized by the typical Roman bathing culture at the empire's borders. Via the Limes watchtower Hienheim, we reach the fort Eining where at the "Roman Festival" true-to-the-original costumed groups of actors take us back to Roman times. Our destination for the day and overnight stay is the Benedictine monastery of Weltenburg, spectacularly situated on the Danube. After dinner, a lecture on Roman drinking and enjoyment culture.

Day 2:- WELTENBURG - REGENSBURG

After a morning tour of the magnificent Baroque monastery, the boat trip from Weltenburg to Kelheim offers us magnificent natural and scenic experiences. The old town of Regensburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has magnificent Roman and medieval buildings. Original features such as the "Alte Wurstkuchel" (Old Sausage Cake) at the Stone Bridge allow us to experience history with all our senses.

DAY 3: WALHALLA - STRAUBING -KÜNZING -PASSAU

After a short stop at the classical "temple of honor" Walhalla, we see one of the most important Roman treasure finds in Germany in the Gäubodenmuseum Straubing. The archaeological museum Quintana in Künzing invites you to a "journey through time" from the Romans to the early medieval Bavarians. The day's destination is the "Three Rivers City" of Passau, whose ancient predecessor settlement is presented in the Boiotro Roman Museum.

Day 4: OBERRANNA- SCHLÖGEN-FRAHAM OIL MILL -LINZ

In Oberranna we see a uniquely well-preserved late antique "Burgus". We explore the "Schlögener Schlinge" of the Danube, also lined with Roman excavations, by means of wooden zills, which are made here by a Danube shipbuilder according to centuries-old tradition. After a visit to the Fraham oil mill, we reach Linz, where the Roman era is visualized through modern technology in the "Ars Electronica Center".

Day 5: Enns - Wallsee-Pöchlarn - Mautern -Krems

Ancient Lauriacum (today Enns) was once a garrison of Legio II Italica, port of the Roman Danube fleet and refuge of the Roman population under St. Severin. After a tour of the town, visit the Roman Museum and the unique Roman lime kiln. Continuation eastwards along the Danube to the Roman forts Ad Iuvense (Wallsee), Arelape (Pöchlarn) and Favianis (Mautern). Overnight stay in romantic Krems.

DAY 6: KREMS - TRAISMAUER - TULLN - ZEISELMAUER - VIENNA - HAINBURG

The small town of Traismauer dates back to a Roman equestrian fort, of which the ramparts, some towers and the praetorium (crypt under the parish church) are still preserved. Via Tulln (Roman museum Comagena) and Zeiselmauer (ancient burgus) we reach Vienna. Here we explore the traces of ancient Vindobona, which as a legionary camp and civilian city at times had more than 30,000 inhabitants. Onward journey and hotel check-in for in Hainburg.

Day 7:EXCURSION CARNUNTUM AND BRATISLAVA

With 50,000 inhabitants, the Upper Pannonian provincial capital of Carnuntum was a real Danubian metropolis in Roman times. In addition to excavations and archaeological finds, a complete city quarter has been reconstructed here, with brightly painted houses and interiors true to the original. A varied program of events including a Roman lunch awaits us. In the afternoon excursion to the Slovakian capital Bratislava and the nearby Roman Museum Gerulata. The return journey to Hainburg. (After dinner small lecture/ round table discussion).

We continue to the Danube Floodplains National Park, where a "primaeval forest" crisscrossed by river branches gives us an idea of what the Danube looked like in Roman times. An impressive boat trip on a faithfully reconstructed "Tschaike" (Danube warship from the 16th/17th century) and an excursion with a park ranger await us. In the early evening return to Linz.t.
